Jon,
I agree, 'mobile' is the future in computing. It will be interesting to watch what comes out of CES this week. I am also interested in what Apple announces at the end of the month. Mobile has not been one of Microsoft's strengths, has it. Some may argue that CE or Windows Mobile is a factor. Anyway, if Microsoft is to survive and grow, they will need a mobile strategy. Thanks for the excellent comments.

Business spends an enormous amount of time tracking the buying trends of the 18-30 consumer but using, surprisingly, very little of what they glean. The industry laments the sagging sales of production OS for stationary hardware and AC powered portables while seeing every employee and family member showing off their cool new phone that does everything their home PC does. The interesting dynamic that is appearing is that of the exodus from traditional hardware, stand alone PCs and laptop computers, to the exploding miniature personal electronics market. From the I-Phone to the DS, young america is trending away from traditional computing toward personal electronics. Whether it be a scalable veneer OS for personal electronics or a foray into the hardware market, the trend needs to be addressed. MS needs to realize the virtual rug is being pulled out from under them by this recent measurable trend.
